New Delhi: India is preparing to test a new long-range anti-ship ballistic missile capable of targeting moving warships or aircraft carriers at distances exceeding 1,000 km, according to defense sources. The missile, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is expected to be tested within the next few days.
This new anti-ship ballistic missile will provide the Indian Navy with enhanced capabilities, allowing it to target enemy vessels from both sea-based and shore-based launch sites. This development is part of India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its missile inventory, which already includes the Pralay ballistic missiles recently ordered by the Indian Army and Air Force.
Defense officials highlighted that the Indian armed forces are steadily expanding their missile arsenal with short- and medium-range systems, aiming to ensure long-term conflict sustainability. Recent conflicts worldwide have demonstrated the effectiveness of ballistic missiles, with some non-state actors reportedly launching hundreds of missiles in a single night.
India’s emphasis on enhancing its missile capabilities comes as it faces ongoing border tensions with China, which possesses a significant rocket force and extensive missile inventory for conventional and non-nuclear applications. Indian defense forces are considering establishing a similar rocket force to address national security challenges effectively.
