Bengaluru: American aerospace giant Boeing has made a significant decision, initiating layoffs in India as well. The company has dismissed 180 employees from its technology center in Bengaluru. Due to ongoing global economic challenges, Boeing is reducing its workforce.
Boeing Employs Around 7,000 People in India
Boeing, one of the leading aircraft manufacturers, has planned a global workforce reduction as part of its restructuring. As part of this strategy, 180 employees from its Boeing India Engineering & Technology Center (BIETC) in Bengaluru have been laid off. According to reports, Boeing, which is facing multiple global challenges, has approximately 7,000 employees in India. The country remains a key market for the company.
Last year, Boeing announced a 10% reduction in its global workforce. This recent layoff in Bengaluru is part of the company’s worldwide downsizing efforts. However, Boeing has not issued an official statement regarding this move. Sources indicate that the layoffs will not impact its clients or government operations. The company described this decision as a strategic adjustment, affecting only a limited number of positions.
Boeing’s Significant Investment in India
Boeing’s engineering and technology centers in Bengaluru and Chennai handle complex aerospace projects. The Bengaluru facility is considered one of the company’s largest investments outside the U.S. According to Boeing’s official website, the company procures nearly $1.25 billion worth of supplies annually from over 300 Indian suppliers.
Wave of Global Layoffs Amid Economic Slowdown
Several multinational companies, including Boeing, have been implementing workforce reductions due to rising operational costs and a slowing global economy. The aerospace sector has been particularly affected by financial constraints and supply chain disruptions.
Boeing’s Presence in 150 Countries
Boeing is one of the largest aerospace and defense technology companies in the world and the largest U.S. exporter. Its business spans across 150 countries. India remains a key market for Boeing’s aircraft and defense contracts. In 2021, the company recorded $62.3 billion in revenue and was ranked 54th on the Fortune 500 list.
However, in recent years, Boeing’s reputation and business have been impacted due to major issues such as the 737 MAX crashes (2018-2019) and production delays.
With this decision, all eyes are now on how Boeing’s workforce reduction in India will impact the country’s aerospace industry.
