New York: A bill has been introduced in the U.S. Congress to impose restrictions on the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. As a result, nearly 3 lakh Indian students may have to leave the U.S. after completing their studies.
The OPT program allows international students to gain professional experience in the U.S. for 12 months after completing their education. Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields are granted an additional 24-month extension. However, under the newly proposed bill in Congress, limitations are likely to be placed on this program.
This proposal has caused significant concern among American and Indian students. Many fear that the new policy changes could shatter their dreams of gaining work experience in the U.S.
One-third of Students Eligible
According to a report by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in the academic year 2023–24, out of the 300,000 Indian students studying in the U.S., about one-third are eligible for the OPT program. Hence, the new policy is expected to have a major impact on Indian students.
What is OPT?
OPT is a work-related program in the U.S. for international students. It allows students to gain work experience related to their field of study after completing their education.
