Pune : At the 125th Science Lecture organized jointly by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Science Park and Planetarium, renowned rural development activist and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Popatrao Pawar delivered an inspiring talk on “Water Conservation and Sustainable Development.”
As part of a special monthly lecture series held on the 1st of every month, Dr. Pawar shared insights into his successful transformation of Hiware Bazar, a village in Ahmednagar district, through a seven-point development model focused on sustainability and community cooperation.
He explained the seven key principles that led to the village’s holistic development: voluntary labor, water resource planning, construction of household toilets, prohibition of alcohol, family planning, ban on deforestation, and restriction of open grazing. These measures helped make Hiware Bazar a model village recognized across the nation.
Dr. Pawar, India’s first sarpanch (village head) to receive the Padma Shri for such grassroots work, continues to serve his village with dedication for over 30 years. His efforts were also acknowledged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the popular radio program “Mann Ki Baat.”
The lecture saw participation from youth, women, school children, members of the Sahitya Parishad, Pimpri-Chinchwad Social Foundation, and dignitaries from various fields across the city.
In the cultural segment of the event, Mrs. Kartiki Gaikwad (Pise), winner of the popular music show “Sa Re Ga Ma”, captivated the audience with her soulful performances of devotional songs, lavanis, and popular Marathi film songs.
The event was hosted by renowned anchor Prof. Digambar Dhokale from Bhosari. The program was successfully coordinated by Dr. Shraddha Khampariya, CEO of the Science Park, along with Mr. Kasar, Mr. Sunil Pote, and their dedicated team.
