Pune, November 18, 2024: The College of Military Engineering (CME), Pune, celebrated the 244th Corps of Engineers Day with great reverence and enthusiasm. The event witnessed participation from serving and veteran sapper officers of the Corps of Engineers.
The celebrations commenced with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial, Southern Command, Pune, to honor the Bravehearts of the Corps who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. Lieutenant General AK Ramesh, Commandant of CME, laid the wreath on behalf of the Sapper fraternity.
A Special Combined Sammelan was also organized at CME, during which Lieutenant General Ramesh addressed the gathering. He urged all ranks to strive for professional excellence and remain prepared to provide effective combat engineering support during both peace and war.
The Corps of Engineers, one of the oldest branches of the Indian Army, traces its origins to the late 18th century. The Corps recognizes its formation from the establishment of the ‘Madras Sappers,’ the senior-most group, under the Madras Presidency. Subsequently, the ‘Bengal Sappers’ and ‘Bombay Sappers’ were raised under their respective presidencies. These groups were merged on November 18, 1932, forming the present-day Corps of Engineers.
Known for their motto, “Sarvatra” (Everywhere), the Sappers have consistently provided exceptional support to the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. They have also significantly contributed to the nation’s achievements in sports and adventure activities.
The Corps of Engineers takes pride in its four pillars—Combat Engineers, Military Engineer Services (MES), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and Military Survey—each of which has made outstanding contributions to the nation in times of both war and peace.
The day served as a testament to the Corps’ glorious history and commitment to upholding its legacy of excellence and service.
