Vancouver, Canada – November 19, 2024: A Cargojet Boeing 767-300ER, operating on behalf of Amazon Prime Air (flight W8-2387, registration C-GAZI), experienced a serious runway excursion at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) early Tuesday morning. The flight, which departed from Hamilton, Ontario, faced technical issues with its flaps, forcing the crew to declare a PAN PAN alert before landing.
The aircraft touched down on runway 08L at 01:28 local time (09:28 UTC) at a higher-than-normal landing speed of approximately 175 knots due to the flap malfunction. Despite the crew’s efforts, the plane overran the runway by 572 meters (1,880 feet) and came to a stop after its nose gear collapsed. Following the incident, the crew declared a MAYDAY.
Emergency services, already on standby, quickly responded to the scene. All three crew members on board were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
The incident caused significant operational disruptions at YVR, with runway 08L closed for investigation and assessment. Runway 08R, which had been closed for maintenance, was reopened to accommodate air traffic.
Airport authorities and Cargojet teams are currently investigating the incident, and efforts are underway to remove the aircraft and restore normal operations.
This marks a significant occurrence for the Canadian cargo carrier, raising questions about aircraft safety protocols under flap failure conditions.
