Pune: November 19 is celebrated as World Toilet Day by the United Nations. Even today, 4.2 billion people around the world lack basic toilets, adversely affecting their health and environment. Given the seriousness of these problems, it is imperative to raise awareness about sustainable sanitation and toilet management.
On the occasion of World Toilet Day this year, Ecosan Services Foundation, World Toilet Organization (WTO), Pune Municipal Corporation, Indian Water Works Association, Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran and Rotary Club Pune Pashan have organized various events on November 24, 2024. “Urgent Run 2024” -a mini marathon, sustainability flea market, Punyache Paani, Sanitation related games for children have been organized with the main objective of making the citizens aware about sustainable sanitation, the importance of toilet use, and the need for sanitation management.
Ecosan Services Foundation is a non-profit organisation registered under Section 8, Pune. For the last 18 years, it has been making significant contributions in the field of water, wastewater management, and sustainable sanitation. Ecosan has spread awareness about toilet management and sanitation among more than 1 lakh students through various projects under school and social initiatives. Ecosan is affiliated to this vision, and organizes various awareness events to mark the day such as World Toilet Day, World Water Day, World Handwashing Day, etc.
In that regard, this year’s activities will be as follows:
• The Urgent Run 2024 will make a sincere effort to create awareness about the challenges and challenges related to toilets and sanitation. The Urgent Run will be organized in two groups
10 km mini marathon: a mini marathon for professional runners
5km Walkathon: Running/brisk walking activity for enthusiasts
• The Sustainability Flea Market will provide a platform for organisations and businesses working on eco-friendly and sustainable products in Pune so that citizens and children can learn about and purchase sustainable products.
• Through this presentation, citizens will be shown information about drinking water sources, treatment plants and sewage management in Pune through an attractive film.
• Steps will be taken to make children aware of responsibility through different hygiene games.
