Pune: The Urokul Urology Institute in Baner will host a two-day international workshop to demonstrate complex bladder surgeries, discuss intricate urological conditions, and explore modern treatment techniques. The workshop is scheduled for December 7 and 8, 2024, as announced by Dr. Sanjay Kulkarni, President of the Urological Society of India, during a press conference. Also present at the event were India’s first female laparoscopic surgeon, Dr. Jyotsna Kulkarni, and urologist Dr. Pankaj Joshi.
Dr. Sanjay Kulkarni shared, “Around 35 to 40 surgeries will be performed during the two-day workshop. These surgeries, conducted at Urokul, will be live-streamed to the Banatara Bhavan auditorium, where urologists from around the globe will observe. Renowned experts such as Prof. Anthony Mundy from London, Dr. Guido Barbagli from Italy, Dr. Ganesh Gopalakrishnan from Tamil Nadu, Julian Shah from London, Dr. Miroslav Djordjevic, Dr. Tarek Abbas from Qatar, Dr. Lee Zhao from the USA, and Dr. Dimitri Nikolavasky will guide the sessions. The workshop will host 500 Indian and 80 international urologists.”
Dr. Kulkarni emphasized the significance of ‘Urethroplasty,’ which has greatly benefitted patients with bladder and related disorders. Some children are born with a condition where the urinary opening is located on the underside of the penis. Advanced surgical techniques are available to treat such conditions. Additionally, for men with erectile dysfunction, a device known as ‘Three-Piece Penile Prosthesis’ can be surgically implanted. This allows the penis to become erect with the press of a button near the scrotum, enabling sexual intercourse.
For men with Peyronie’s disease, where the penis bends upon erection, corrective surgery can straighten it. For patients experiencing urinary leakage post-surgery, artificial muscles can be placed around the urethra to prevent leakage. Such procedures are routinely performed at Urokul. Furthermore, in cases where accidents result in a rupture of the tube connecting the kidney and bladder, leading to urine leaking into the abdomen, robotic-assisted surgery will repair the delicate tube. The advanced “Da Vinci Robot” technology, which has been in use at Eurokul for the past 1.5 years, will be utilized for these complex surgeries during the workshop.
