
Pune: The Southern Command of the Indian Army marked the 54th Vijay Diwas on 16 December 2024 with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Command War Memorial in Pune. The event commemorates India’s decisive victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak War, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.
Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Army Commander, Southern Command, paid homage to the martyrs by laying a wreath and reflecting on their supreme sacrifice for the nation. The ceremony brought together 1971 War veterans, serving officers, school children, NCC cadets, and dignitaries, fostering a spirit of gratitude and remembrance.
Vijay Diwas stands as a testament to India’s military prowess and strategic acumen. The war culminated in the surrender of over 93,000 Pakistani troops, making it one of the most decisive victories in modern history. This triumph liberated millions of oppressed people and elevated India’s standing on the global stage.
As part of the commemoration, a 405-kilometer Ultra Marathon was organized under the aegis of the Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa Area. Flagged off from Colaba, Mumbai, on 6 December 2024, the marathon concluded at the Command War Memorial in Pune. It featured 15 core runners, including notable participants like Col Mandeep Singh Maan (Retd) and Captain Pooja Mehra (Retd), alongside veterans, school children, local citizens, and NCC cadets. The runners passed through Nashik, Ahilyanagar, and Kolhapur, celebrating the valor and legacy of the 1971 war.
This event also set the stage for the upcoming Army Day 2025 celebrations, scheduled for 15 January in Pune. This is the first time Pune will host the prestigious event, under the theme “Samarth Bharat – Saksham Sena” (Capable India – Empowered Army). The theme highlights the seamless integration of strength, resilience, and technological advancement within the Indian Army, as it continues to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty.
The Army Day celebrations promise a grand display of military achievements, cutting-edge technology, and the indomitable spirit of the armed forces, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to the nation.
