Pune: In a landmark move, the United Nations General Assembly has designated December 21, 2024, as the inaugural World Meditation Day, marking a global acknowledgment of meditation’s transformative benefits for mental health, peace, and unity. The resolution, passed on November 29, 2024, aims to institutionalize an annual celebration, encouraging individuals worldwide to embrace the practice for holistic well-being.
India at the Forefront
India, the birthplace of meditation, took center stage at the UN headquarters in New York. The Permanent Mission of India organized a special event featuring a global meditation session led by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living Foundation. With the theme “Meditation for Global Peace and Harmony,” the session sought to promote meditation as a tool for mental resilience and global goodwill.
A Global Call for Peace and Well-being
Meditation, an ancient practice rooted in India’s history, has evolved into a universal approach to addressing modern challenges such as stress, anxiety, and societal division. Recognizing its potential, the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights meditation’s role in fostering emotional balance, improving focus, and enhancing physical health.
