Pune: A claim has been made that a young Chartered Accountant (CA) working at the multinational company Ernst & Young (EY) has died due to excessive work stress. The name of the young woman is Anna Sebastian Perayil (age 26). Her mother’s email to the company heads has gone viral on social media, raising several questions about the company’s work culture.
Anna joined the EY Pune office on March 18 this year, and she passed away on July 20. Although the exact cause of her death is still unclear, it is believed that she died due to a heart attack. Her mother, Anita Augustine, had sent a detailed email to Rajiv Memani, the Chairman of EY India. That email has now gone viral on social media, where Anita claims that Anna’s death was due to work-related stress. It was also highlighted that no one from the company attended Anna’s funeral.
In the email, Anita Augustine wrote that this was Anna’s first job, and she was initially very excited. However, within just four months of joining the company, she passed away. She was under a lot of work stress, working late into the night and even during weekends. Being new to the company, a heavy workload was placed upon her. Her managers were assigning tasks to her at the last minute, which kept her constantly stressed.
The work, the new environment, and the long hours took a toll on Anna physically, mentally, and intellectually. Many who joined EY have left the job due to excessive work stress. Just four months after starting her job, Anna passed away.
