New Delhi: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Habitats Trust and HCL Foundation, marking a significant step toward marine conservation efforts. The partnership, formalized at Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi, is focused on addressing key environmental challenges in India’s coastal waters.

One of the primary goals of this collaboration is the removal of ghost nets—abandoned fishing gear that poses severe threats to marine life. In addition, the MoU outlines initiatives to map and classify areas affected by ghost gear, enabling more targeted cleanup efforts in ecologically sensitive regions.

The agreement also includes surveys to monitor and protect marine biodiversity, with an emphasis on involving coastal communities in conservation activities. By engaging local stakeholders, the partnership aims to foster a sense of stewardship and promote sustainable practices to preserve India’s rich marine ecosystems.
